Issues I treat
This is not an exhaustive list, but it covers the issues I feel the most competent treating, as I’ve had years of experience, training and education to ensure I can help you reach your therapy goals.
First generation challenges
If you or your parents relocated to the US from another country, first of all I’m truly glad you’re here, and second of all, my work in the Bay Area brought me into contact with many families and individuals struggling to find ways to connect values from the past with the values of their new home. I would love to help you with generational and cultural challenges.
Career counseling
Whether you’re a younger adult just beginning your work, or an older adult experiencing career burnout or age discrimination, I have experience helping people sort out their career goals and resolve workplace challenges.
Codependency
I often say codependency is a hidden epidemic in the United States, and although it may not be a formal stand-alone diagnosis, is very, very worthy of examination and treatment. At its core, when we suffer from codependency, we feel that we cannot experience happiness or peace unless someone else important in our life (usually another adult, but sometimes a dependent) is also happy and at peace, and usually we’ve decided their happiness and peace (and sometimes their health and welfare) are entirely our responsibility. Codependency is often the over-use of a coping mechanism from a traumatic childhood which has outgrown its usefulness.
Perinatal disorders (also referred as “post partum”)
Getting pregnant and having a baby is a major life event for all parents involved, no matter their gender or role. If you’re a mom or a dad experiencing intrusive thoughts (“Maybe the baby would be better off with another family,” “I’m always worried the baby is going to die”), psychosis, depression, anxiety or OCD that seems to have shown up during pregnancy or when the baby arrived, please contact me or another provider ASAP*. Perinatal disorders deserve to be taken seriously, as they don’t typically go away on their own, and you deserve to be a happy parent.
(*An important note—many healthcare providers are becoming more and more familiar with perinatal mental health issues. Do not be afraid to reach out for help if you need it).
Relocation adjustment
Moving to a new home in a new state (or even a new home in the same state!) is challenging! Let me help make that adjustment easier.
Family estrangement
Many people cannot relate to coming from a toxic family of origin, from which we sometimes have to disengage or separate. If you struggle with this, I have personal and professional experience in this area and can help you decide what you need to do to balance self care with your need for connection.
Anxiety
These days, anxiety is something almost all of us live with and can relate to. If your anxiety feels like it’s interfering with your daily, normal life, let’s work together to manage and even reduce it!
C-PTSD
Chronic PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a serious disorder that can and does wreak havoc on every aspect of our lives. It causes a host of symptoms and problems, such as trouble relating to others, trust issues, anxiety, depression, thought disorders, nightmares, panic attacks, and many other troubling challenges that make it hard to survive. I am a survivor of trauma with C-PTSD and would be honored to help you address and hopefully resolve some of the trauma you’ve experienced.
Bereavement
All humans eventually suffer loss. This can be the loss of a family member, a friend, a pet, miscarriage, or the more philosophical loss of something important to you, such as loss of status or the grief that comes with relocation, or coming to terms with any loss of identity, for example. I am familiar with many forms of bereavement and appreciate the complexity of learning to live with a loss.
